Artist Statement
"My interest is
not to be different, unique or shocking, but rather to be true to my subject
with a little of me in there. I create well thought out compositions with
accurate likenesses capturing a unique moment in time which results
in beautiful paintings .
The purpose of my life is to enrich others lives through my art and music".
"I paint what I love in most in life .....(not in this particular order) ... people, beautiful women and children, sunsets, sunrises, snow, autumn, shorelines, fine instruments and musicians playing them.
Artist Bio
Although Mark Lovett began playing guitar and singing professionally at the age of 14, his drawing and painting passion did not take root until his early forties. Born in Maryland and living in a suburb outside of Washington DC, Lovett began studying the works of the masters such as Sargent, Sorolla and Velasquez frequenting the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC.
Lovett honed his drawing skills at local live nude model sessions, and briefly studied with the famous portrait/figure painter Nelson Shanks in Philadelphia, PA as well as with another famous classical figure/portrait painter, Robert Liberace in Virginia.
Lovett's studio currently resides in the historical Glenview/Rockville Civic Center Mansion, and his passion is painting portraits, contemporary realist figures, and occasional vintage guitar still life inspired by his vintage guitar playing .
How I often work
I often stretch my own canvas on heavy stretcher bars using fine oil primed linen. I design my compositions carefully with the end goal in mind, and although every painting is different, I usually paint an accurate grisaille or under drawing using raw umber and ultramarine blue. When the initial drawing is correct, I begin working the forms and values, and later slowly add color. I like to keep my edges soft and allow my forms to flow one into another.
I achieve an accurate likeness of the subject, and keep it loose and relaxed. I work from photo's, sketches and from life . I paint as the old masters painted using layer upon layer of oil glazes producing a luminous effect. It takes much longer to complete a painting this way, but the end result is well worth all the effort I put into it. I work hard to make sure that each painting that I create is of the highest quality attainable.
Mark Lovett is a n award winning full time portrait and figure oil painter and is available for painting commissions. His work is in private collections on the East coast and can be seen at his studio by appointment and in shows at various times of the year.
