Toning The Canvas – Instruction by master portrait painter

By December 6, 2009June 1st, 2016Portrait Painting Instruction, Portraits

After the canvas is stretched properly, often the next thing that I do will be to tone the canvas. I usually do not want to begin the painting from the white canvas alone, but I rather I chose a color temperature and value to cover the entire canvas based on the work that I am about to begin. This will help unify the work and give me an easier value to work with.

In this video download, I discuss various options and the decision making process that goes into this procedure and you can actually watch me apply the tone. I will let it dry for a day or two before I go on to the next stage.

If you have a question after watching the video download, I will be happy to do my best to answer it if you log into my Ustream chat room when Im broadcasting live.
